feel the woofers lightly, see if they still have some elasticity to them, especially if they're kinda old. my stepfather had a set of cerwin vegas that where well wroked in. he'd be bombed listen to aerosmith and tragically hip, got me into music though.

my recommendations would be:

KRK V6 (own, i write and start mixes on them)
KRK RP5/6 (good for writing, wouldnt mix on them)

HS50 (writing or DJing)
HS80 (write and mix)

Im going to buy a pair of JBL LSR's for mxing on when i move into my bigger place this summer.

konflicts been trying to unload a nice set of jbl's on here for awhile, maybe not exactly what you're looking to get for home, but here's a link to the classifieds if you havent already checked them out and would like to explore another option:

Thanks Firesavvy, but those are PA speakers. Would be great if i was only using them for DJ practice (im getting a pair of mackie active PA's for that). But im need a really nice set of studio monitors.

Im actually working on picking up the LSR2328 pair with the sub for my new spot when i move and install the panels, refractors, diffusers and massive super chunks.

I have a pair of the JBLs, and they are great. Need to get the sub to go with them now.

I can vouch for the YSM-1Ps, I've been using a pair for like 10 years. There's also a matching sub that you can add later if you want, although I haven't felt the need to add it. Oh, and you can crank them to test stuff LOUD without much worry, because there's a built-in limiter.

anyone have any experience with the Mackie MR8s? i was intending to only buy the sub until buddy offered the Mackies to me for $150. i knew they're just over $300 a piece at Axe Music brand new. so i bought em without doing any research. even if i don't enjoy them, i can sell them off for at least double what i paid and buy something else.

you'll never go wrong with mackie's. those ones in particular are i think about 120 watts.

especially tied into the krk 10s sub. i actually used the krk sub at a gig last week, along with a rented yorkville 10'' powered sub. and the krk was better performing than the yorkville. i tied my krk set up into the pre amp board, and used the rp6's and the 10s as monitors over the peavy p.a. system and yorkville powered sub. i had the silver fox yacht club just pounding.....lol and if you know the place....its fairly big.
